Turkish Gendarmerie run away during a protest against Islamic State (IS) near Sanliurfa, Turkey, 04 October 2014. The fall of Kobane – the smallest of three autonomous Kurdish cantons established last year by the PYD and allies – would give the Islamic State uncontested control of a huge stretch of Syria’s border with Turkey.
